Train to Be

In the Industry

The Neurotechnologist (NT) is a key member of the surgical team, working closely with the surgeon and anesthesiologist. They interact directly with patients, obtain consent, place electrodes, and establish baseline nerve function before intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) for changes throughout surgery. If any changes occur, the neurotechnologist collaborates with a neurologist and alerts the surgical team so issues can be addressed quickly, helping prevent serious complications. If you’re drawn to a fast-paced, high-impact healthcare role, a career in intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) may be a great fit.

NMA offers salaried training positions, Neurotechnologist Trainee. See our Careers page for open positions in your area.

Becoming a NT with NMA

To qualify for NMA’s training program you should hold a Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degree from an accredited university, preferably in a biological or health sciences field.

If selected to join the NMA training program you will undergo a one year training period that includes intensive didactic and practical training. The culmination of the training program is certification in intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring, designated by the CNIM credential.

Our Training Approach

If selected for our ABRET-recognized IONM training program, you’ll begin with a two-week “Boot Camp” in Salt Lake City, UT, covering core disciplines such as anatomy, neurophysiology, anesthesia, and instrumentation. You’ll then transition to a 12-week clinical training at a designated site, working one-on-one with a mentor in the operating room while continuing online coursework. After completing this 14-week phase and passing competency assessments, you’ll begin independently monitoring basic and intermediate spine cases and relocate to your permanent location if needed.

Training continues with advanced clinical skill development tailored to your local market, along with additional online education. Around nine months in, you’ll begin preparing for the CNIM exam through a structured program that includes guided study and an in-person review course.
